Honoring Master Hadi Tajvidi
Pioneer in Iranian Minature
Master Hadi Tajvidi is the undisputed master of Persian traditional miniature painting. In fact he was the one who brought back the Persian art of Miniature after approximately 3 centuries of absence from the time of Safavi. Till the beginning of Pahlavi Regime to its traditional and classical state, his short life was nt recognized as one should be.
Hadi Tajvidi was born in 1892 (1272 Iranian year of Shamsi) in the Esfahan. Esfahan in Iran is know as the city of art. Tajvidi was the son of Mohamad Ali Soltan Alketab Mazhab, who was a famous writer because of his beautiful handwritting. Tajvidi's mother's great grandparent, Mizra Baba Naghash Bashi was also a famous artist of his time. He was born in a family that nourished art. This caused Tajvidi's his creatie bloom. His older brothers, Mohamad and Mehdi Kazem were pioneers in painting. Mehdi has created excellent pieces of water painitngs. He would sig his name as Mehdi Taeb. Mehdi was also a geat poet.
Tajvidi studied with great masters, Agha Mohamad Ebrahim Nemat Elahi (aka Naghash Bashi), Agha Mirza Ahmad, and Master Haj Mossavarolmaleki, who was a miniaturist and a paitner. Tajvidi was deeply inspired by all of these great masters.
In 1917 (1295 Iranian year of Shamsi), Tajvidi moved to Tehran and joined Master Agha Mirza Yahya Khan Naghash Bashi. He learned different styles of paintings that were common and current in Ghaajar's style "Lac-coloured". His son Dr. Akbar Tajvidi writes about his father, that he was not et 20 years old when he went to Tehran with brother. And that they started working the same method of Ghajar paintings. This continued since the people interested in ths type of traditional art, followed the same style that became to be known as miniature painting. This continued since people interesed in this type of traditional art. From this point on, Persian paintings was named miniature.
Some of the Iranian artists, that sat behind behind lows desks or worked on thier knees, worked with small paint brushes made with cat hair, followed the western style and continued to work with big, rough brushes and used thick oil paints on the easels.
Hadi Tajvidi joined the only art university in Tehran, called Kamalolomolk School. Here they studied classic painting and nature creation. Because of his extraordinary talent, Tajvidi at the same time was learning anatomy and water paint. He also taught and got his profesorship at the school. There for the young professor bcame a very influential and strong artist in Iran.
Tajvidi also had a musical talent. He studied Darvish Khan's primary schooling method and learned the traditional classical repetoire (Radif).
In 1930 (1308, Iranian year of Shamsi), Hossein Taherzadeh Behzad decided to establish a new school to restore traditional arts. He invited all the artists from the county to participate in the test. He elected Tajvidi who created a piece of miniature called "Purple Dome" in the Safavi style. This was a valuabl peice in the museum of art. Tajvidi was then chosen to teach miniature in the school of fne arts.
Master Hadi Tajvidi was also extremely talented and skilled in portrait paintings. His special style and his experience, taught geniuses for 8 years. After which, he created a school that is still common with his followers.
In 1940 (1318,Iranian year of Shamsi) Hadi Tajvidi passed away.
